Globalisation, Sustainability & the Media

Globalisation, Sustainability & the Media

One unified culture is taking over.

Definitions of Globalisation

This process of globalisation could be figured in a positive way. The idea of spreading communism to very culture and was a desirable aim and not necessarily a negative way.

Capitalism: If you keep capitalism to one culture you are exhausting your market so they can all absorb the capitalism. Globalisation is something capitalist cultures encourage to spread the market.

Globalisation

One defintion is this one below and then also its the spread of the western way of life. The logical conclusion of globalisation is the idea of recognising one single culture.
These are 4 different definitions some of which are positive and some are loaded.

As a by product of markets expanding into second and third world countries. The spreading of one sort of cultural values to the rest of the world.

McDonalds
It refers to the idea that american bg companies are ever present all over the globe. McDonalds you can find in every major city. This is a particular American idea of organising the world. It refers to the idea of fast food against slow food. Eating fastly through not caring about health and not bonding over meals. The idea of work under the capitalist model. Work has a way of contributing to society as you take some form of identity to. Work becomes meaningless. The process of the spread of a certain model in society. A forced spread dominating other cultures in the world.

Marshall McLuhan
A philosopher,  he wrote an excellent book but also flawed. They have a massive effect on humanity and how to connect with each other. He is saying that new technologies are like extensions of our senses. Eg. Radios so we can hear stuff from the other side of the world. And we can experience the effects of our actions on others. Our embrace is that ultimately bringing some harmonious culture together.

Global Village Thesis
The world has shrunk, this is idea is that the globe shrinks and instead becoming a global village, becoming aware of each other and their problems. The internet has expanding what he was saying by been able to go on internet to find out what is going on, seeing what is happening in live time. However, this has not happened. In a sense we are almost desensitised. This is the flaw.

The Internet
We are not a global tribe, we are more seperated and technology hasn't saved the day. Rather than a global system immerging, and rival immerges are arriving and tearing the world apart.

A cultural world is happen, the dominate rival ideology is radical Islam. This is about, these cultures do feel that there whole life & culture has been destroyed and taken over by the west. We don't have a global embrace!

Three problems of globalisation:
National identity becomes meaningless, what is it to be British in a global culture? The loss of identity within this global monoculture.
Accountability,  governments had powers to stop companies becoming too powerful. When a company is in more than one company it become extremely difficult to police. Effectively, businesses are more powerful than governments and can act outside the control of governments. If you stop restrictions on businesses then what happens is that they create loads of money and every one benefits but then this money doesn't get redistributed.

QUOTE
One particular culture is began to spread across all the world.

Cultural Imperialism
Chomsky describes how this process works.
This spread of culture through art, design & media. There is a myth in globalised capitalism, that the whole world is a market and everyone has the same share in that market. And everyone has the same access to the same information, which is not true.

Rigging the "Free Market"
This tends to be controlled about oligopolies which are giant clusters of businesses. And in the media can be traced back in the ownership of the big multimedia companies, and can be brought back to about 5 or 6 oligopolies all of which are American/

Time Warner
All of those companies which are across the media are all controlled by one company. In conclusion this one company controls the cultural output of the vast percent of the worlds media. Effectively, it doesnt matter where you are reading this, you are getting an American outlook on the world.

Because these large oligopolies own the world:

Not only do these corporaions control most of the media, they focus their attention to markets where thay can make the mos money. Concerns of North American primarily, becayse its a business, will be prioristised in that pucvlication. Will be less interested in African for eg. cause they have less money. Back dorr proess as people start to understand the concerns of the first world as their concerns. Look on TV is about American culre, films etc... Values & ideas of American capitalism get spread, has a wider effect than just money making.

New ofrm of imperalism
You are who you are by what you own - this consumer logic has been spread to third worlds, although this is highly unobtainable for them.

Big Brother
This was a American multinational source. Given this Western culture, this has some alarming effects. Its no accident that the biggest growth in India is skin whitening cream. Due to American beauty as a thing to be chased. Non white races try to be more like the people who are dominating them.

Chomsky & Herman
Because this monoculture is everywhere and effecting others on different levels, This becomes difficult to challenge. This could be thought of as a western propaganda. It has the same effect of what you are been fed, in that this is the right way of life, this is how we should act this is how we should look.

Propaganda Model

OWNERSHIP- Effectively most of our newspapers are owned by one man. Rupert Murdock, his agenda is to make as much money for himself as possible. And in the reporting of the news is that what you find is running stories which are acting as real. These people have a strong power. It has a noticeable social effect and it is a mistake to think that any of these stories are without of the bias.

FUNDING-
Also the business would not allow it as then they would not make profit and you need to have certain content. As you need to keep the advertisers happy.

SOURCING- The things that are reported are only what are allowed to be reported, as editors want to be within the politic systems.

FLAK- They use the media that perpetuates there take on the world. They are a lobby groub for big oil companies. They get stories into newspapers and produce a system of destroying disent. They paint the oil companies in a great light. The short advertisements shown as diguised news and have been commisioned as stories.

All this combine to make it a propaganda system.

 Rupert Murdock Owns:

Al Gore "An Inconvienient Truth" Trailer
It gets the message across, and is based on scientific evidence. The lesson of this story is that to save the planet is not to overthrown the richer. If we are over producing cO2. cO2 neutral is by buying an energy saving light bulb although this doesn't as you are still polluting. The solution to the world problems is to buy more things for example buy a hybrid vechical and energy light bulbs. The capitalist businesses are saying this and creating a pressing issue.
All different campaign groups have now started to use visual campaigns/communication.

But still the flat earthers:

The Guardian
The size of the balls reflect the size of the emissions for each country. They try to put out a solution to global warming. But they are always blocked by some countries, so until all countries agree nothing is ever going to be done about this.

Sustainability
The notion of sustainability is the one which everyone should be sympathetic with. Sustainability is effectively the part of the globalisation in ways of stopping the head long grace of the resources of fossil fuels. Also to allow societies to sustain themselvs in capitalist expansion. It is a funamental contradiction.

Sustainable Capitalism
BIOX fuel
This design which is addressing the problem. Although this is more expensive to produce and therefore only the rich buy it and there would also be less profit made form this.
It started to produce pollutants to effect the area and therefore causing more problems that what it is solving. Any idea of solving the problems of capitalism by capitalism is flawed from the start.

Effectively a new sexy market has emerged of a green market. The reason why McDonalds changed there scheme to green to make people think that they are ethical and indoctrinating a new market. The whole eco market is a total myth.

Effectively, as Papanek says that under a capitalist system is that things are manufactured to sell to people and its the media which plays a role in selling that to people.

This is AdBusters Black Spot Sneaker
You are effectively buying a shoe and therefore fighting capitalism. The way you solve capitalism is not buy making people to buy more things. You challenge it by the companies that are selling the products.

G20 Protests
This crisis is not caused by the people but this particular relief.

The solution is not through green consumtion.
