Secondary Research

I like this website due to the navigation bar been to the right and you can just scroll down so its page after page. Although, the use of direction of what to do, does this make it a good website?

I like this clinical website. I like how the navigation bar is not the full length or width of the page. The use of the image is straight away an obvious notion to what the website is about. I like the use of negative space and the simplistic social media icons top right.

I like this website. The background is a video and moves around when it loads with the title over the top. This would be good for my website maybe having a video of someone on a rollercoaster. Although, I do think this would be quite difficult to get right, with only the basic knowledge we have been taught.

I like this website as it scrolls downwards and breaks each page up with an image. Although, if you wouldn't know how to work it out you have the buttons at the side which will also take you to the page.

I think this website is quite confusing for the homepage. I think there is too much on the page. The logos are a lot to take in. I think this has taught me maybe not to include the logos for each park as this would be overwhelming for the first page for the audience to come to.

I think this has too many fonts too. The different styles and font strokes is hard to focus on one word and you don't know where to look first. Also, I am not liking the navigation bar at the bottom as when you first come to it I had to look for the bar and this was the last place I looked. So this is something that I wouldn't do from this research.

I like the clinical look of this website. The use of two colours works really well and one image so its not confusing to the eye.  The navigation bar is very clear and I like the idea of the navigation bar been inline with the logo.

Again the use of an image behind the text although this does make it hard to read the quote straight off. This website does not have scroll and all the information fits within the screen. I like the use of opacity on the navigation bar as then you can still see the image behind and doesn't break up the screen.

I found this website confusing when I first got it because I thought the text box with the dots & arrows in was to change the page and therefore didn't realise there was more information below and this was just the image slider changer. Then the navigation bar was at the top in which you didn't see first & foremost as the image slider took centre stage.

This is similar to the website above although this video is just on the homepage and you can skip it or you can watch it then it automatically takes you to the homepage. This is therefore acting like a landing page.

This is a very interesting website, and I would look to be able to create something like this. You press the dots at the side and the aeroplane slides to that page or you can scroll to make the aeroplane go slow and you can see the scenery. Although, this website doesn't hold any information and I think it would be hard to add information onto this style of website.

I think this is a very innovative and creative website. I love how they have integrated the kitkat and made it in motion so it makes it more interesting. The pages are broken up by a picture again, which that I would love to be able to do. But I don't know what it is called to be able to research how to do it. You should do on it! The story of the kitkat it showed and the kitkat is shredded of its chocolate. Its very clever!

I like these infographics as buttons. The colours of pastels work really well against the white background.Although, you have no option of a navigation bar you have to scroll down. Also the scroll bar is not always there only when you start scrolling unless you knew about websites etc... you wouldn't necessarily know to scroll.

This website made no sense at all and I still don't know how to use it! The bike wheels roll and the blue section of the screen scrolls horizontally but it doesn't scroll or no buttons to change page the who made this link? is at the bottom which is very small and personally I wouldn't press it because of the uselessness of the page. When you press it, it takes your to there actual website but there is no reason for this, if there is no reason for your website its not going to work!

Censorship & Truth

Censorship & Truth.

Ansel Adams
The idea of dark room manipulations.

Stalin with Naikolai Yezhov
The image on the right he has been removed from it.

This is a manipulated photography so therefore not true.

These are created by adbusters and therefore there is a questioning of whether advertising is ethical.

Kate Winslet GQ
Elongated the length of her legs on photoshop, you may question is there any real problem to manipulate things to sell a product? Arguably you may consider examples of documentary film as then it does matter as it presents and communicates a certain message as it becomes very powerful & strong.

The photographer is not liable for the manipulation, he complained as he argued that it wasn't communicating what he photographed.

Robert Capa
In terms of truth as he is not called robert capa in real life, he changed his name to sell photographs. They built up a myth of a name. He was in actual fact Eastern European although he created an image of an American. This is an image in terms that is this an actual moment of a death of a solider or was it set up? Or does it matter as it captures the scene well and communicates the message.

QUOTE

Ths is writing about WW2.
This is the image with the caption that complimented the photograph. the description is poetic in terms of language. It paints a poetic image which is persuasive and shows what has gone on and a persuasive way to think about it.

Jean Baudrillard
A postmodernist thinker. and talks about simulacra & simulations.
This idea of simulation with it having no parallel with reality.

Peter Turnley
He says in this quotation that he captured the mine of death. This took place on the morning of the day the war ended. He talks about the carnage he witnessed and what he photographed and how he wasn't allowed to show them. He is talking about the run up to the second gulf war. This is to communicate not my point of view but to show the citizens about the war.

This is convoy that is in Bangdad, this is when the war had finished and these people had been destroyed. With the idea of propaganda. He wanted to show you something very different to what the press would have shown you.

Macey D
QUOTE
He caused offense to the people who had relatives who died in the WW. He was saying that its not really like a war we know it, we might see it as a reproduction of war as it was designed as media coverage. He pointed out that it coincided with eastern standard time.

Baudrillard
QUOTE
He discusses the strange realities of seeing it on CN.

Peter Turnley
He is trying to get away form the way and the immediate effect. You can question that this may cause distress. The use of black & white photography, does it take away from the detail of reality.

Ken Jarecke
He photographed in the same convoy as Peter, at this point he was allowing, it was too true for people to see as you may question do you want the things we see to be censored?

QUOTE
This quote is arguably one sided. He makes the point of its a simulation. Do you want an accurate detail of truth with the detail or not know the truth.

QUOTE
The gulf war did not take place.
Its talking about the idea of metaphors been used to communicate the truth.

An-My Le
These images are not real to reality. A very different representation of war compared to Peter.

Censorship

Morals

Ethics

Theodore
This is a blique perception of the world.

Cadburys Flake
They have played on this sexuality ambiguity.

Oliviero Toscani
His photographs have been used in these adverts. The criticism of this is that we don't know if this is a simulated theme. This was when HIV was a sexual transmitted disease. He was made to look like Jesus an therefore created shock to a lot of Italians.

QUOTE

Could question the fact if is there anything innocent about a baby been born.

Agnolo Brozino
The question of nudity. Its famous for a number of reasons. You are seeing the mythological subject matter, it aint true but its representing. The woman and the son, snogging his mother but this is acceptable because of the culture of art.

Edouard Manet
Andy Earl
This caused shock. Due to the singer been 15 at the time of doing this shooting. The public perception is changing due to notions of pedophilia. Nobody batted an eyelid at the time. You may also say that has it been placed as a piece of fine art and justifiable.

Amy Adler
She looks ate the irreconcilable rule of artistic practice.

The Miller Test
Is there a thing as a average person. Arguably this is something people have been trying to change for years. Should it be something that is available to everybody. Should we acknowledge this average person. Who is to decide whether your a creative perosn and what is a serious value or not.

Obscenity Law

Sally Mann
Childhood photography, she is often critiqued. The use of the candy cigarettes and if they should be available to buy as does it encourage smoking. She documents her family growing up.
Its been questioned of is this damaging to the children. Is it child pornography?

Tierney Gearon
She is arguably more naive more than innocent. She met Nigella Lawson at some party and a former fashion model.

Untitled 2001
A lot of the elements of the gaze theory tie in with this. Her grandfather is in the background. The male looking at the female and her wearing a mask so she can't return the gaze. At the time there was a media sensation about it and the gallery deemed nothing wrong with it.

Nan Goldin
She says her friends children was playing and she captured the image.

Richard Prince
This was published in a photoshoot. Her mother allowed her to go ahead and appeared in an adult mens magazine. He has a whole set of images of dealing with the demise of the spiritual in America.

QUOTE
This makes the change of the public perceptions.

Spiritual American
This is how they got rid of the art, the legal view points changing and therefore the publics view changing due to this image been seen now as offensive.

Richard Prince.
She asked him to photograph her. You may question the sexual objectification of women or is it playing to the preconceptive notions of women in art.

Survery Monkey Questionnaire

These are my questions I wrote in my survey. I was very happy with my responses I received. Although, they was all from the West Yorkshire area. Here is my results:

What I have found is that I have realised that Alton Towers is the most popular theme park and therefore This is will be my first button so its the first thing that most people can relate with when they come onto my website. Then it will go across to Light Water valley because this is next most popular park. So I do believe I should have asked if they would have felt they would have benefited from a comparison site etc... as I do believe that this is the only thing I gained from this. Apart from the rides but mainly these way from the most popular park rather then equally spread.

Globalisation, Sustainability & the Media

Globalisation, Sustainability & the Media

One unified culture is taking over.

Definitions of Globalisation

This process of globalisation could be figured in a positive way. The idea of spreading communism to very culture and was a desirable aim and not necessarily a negative way.

Capitalism: If you keep capitalism to one culture you are exhausting your market so they can all absorb the capitalism. Globalisation is something capitalist cultures encourage to spread the market.

Globalisation

One defintion is this one below and then also its the spread of the western way of life. The logical conclusion of globalisation is the idea of recognising one single culture.
These are 4 different definitions some of which are positive and some are loaded.

As a by product of markets expanding into second and third world countries. The spreading of one sort of cultural values to the rest of the world.

McDonalds
It refers to the idea that american bg companies are ever present all over the globe. McDonalds you can find in every major city. This is a particular American idea of organising the world. It refers to the idea of fast food against slow food. Eating fastly through not caring about health and not bonding over meals. The idea of work under the capitalist model. Work has a way of contributing to society as you take some form of identity to. Work becomes meaningless. The process of the spread of a certain model in society. A forced spread dominating other cultures in the world.

Marshall McLuhan
A philosopher,  he wrote an excellent book but also flawed. They have a massive effect on humanity and how to connect with each other. He is saying that new technologies are like extensions of our senses. Eg. Radios so we can hear stuff from the other side of the world. And we can experience the effects of our actions on others. Our embrace is that ultimately bringing some harmonious culture together.

Global Village Thesis
The world has shrunk, this is idea is that the globe shrinks and instead becoming a global village, becoming aware of each other and their problems. The internet has expanding what he was saying by been able to go on internet to find out what is going on, seeing what is happening in live time. However, this has not happened. In a sense we are almost desensitised. This is the flaw.

The Internet
We are not a global tribe, we are more seperated and technology hasn't saved the day. Rather than a global system immerging, and rival immerges are arriving and tearing the world apart.

A cultural world is happen, the dominate rival ideology is radical Islam. This is about, these cultures do feel that there whole life & culture has been destroyed and taken over by the west. We don't have a global embrace!

Three problems of globalisation:
National identity becomes meaningless, what is it to be British in a global culture? The loss of identity within this global monoculture.
Accountability,  governments had powers to stop companies becoming too powerful. When a company is in more than one company it become extremely difficult to police. Effectively, businesses are more powerful than governments and can act outside the control of governments. If you stop restrictions on businesses then what happens is that they create loads of money and every one benefits but then this money doesn't get redistributed.

QUOTE
One particular culture is began to spread across all the world.

Cultural Imperialism
Chomsky describes how this process works.
This spread of culture through art, design & media. There is a myth in globalised capitalism, that the whole world is a market and everyone has the same share in that market. And everyone has the same access to the same information, which is not true.

Rigging the "Free Market"
This tends to be controlled about oligopolies which are giant clusters of businesses. And in the media can be traced back in the ownership of the big multimedia companies, and can be brought back to about 5 or 6 oligopolies all of which are American/

Time Warner
All of those companies which are across the media are all controlled by one company. In conclusion this one company controls the cultural output of the vast percent of the worlds media. Effectively, it doesnt matter where you are reading this, you are getting an American outlook on the world.

Because these large oligopolies own the world:

Not only do these corporaions control most of the media, they focus their attention to markets where thay can make the mos money. Concerns of North American primarily, becayse its a business, will be prioristised in that pucvlication. Will be less interested in African for eg. cause they have less money. Back dorr proess as people start to understand the concerns of the first world as their concerns. Look on TV is about American culre, films etc... Values & ideas of American capitalism get spread, has a wider effect than just money making.

New ofrm of imperalism
You are who you are by what you own - this consumer logic has been spread to third worlds, although this is highly unobtainable for them.

Big Brother
This was a American multinational source. Given this Western culture, this has some alarming effects. Its no accident that the biggest growth in India is skin whitening cream. Due to American beauty as a thing to be chased. Non white races try to be more like the people who are dominating them.

Chomsky & Herman
Because this monoculture is everywhere and effecting others on different levels, This becomes difficult to challenge. This could be thought of as a western propaganda. It has the same effect of what you are been fed, in that this is the right way of life, this is how we should act this is how we should look.

Propaganda Model

OWNERSHIP- Effectively most of our newspapers are owned by one man. Rupert Murdock, his agenda is to make as much money for himself as possible. And in the reporting of the news is that what you find is running stories which are acting as real. These people have a strong power. It has a noticeable social effect and it is a mistake to think that any of these stories are without of the bias.

FUNDING-
Also the business would not allow it as then they would not make profit and you need to have certain content. As you need to keep the advertisers happy.

SOURCING- The things that are reported are only what are allowed to be reported, as editors want to be within the politic systems.

FLAK- They use the media that perpetuates there take on the world. They are a lobby groub for big oil companies. They get stories into newspapers and produce a system of destroying disent. They paint the oil companies in a great light. The short advertisements shown as diguised news and have been commisioned as stories.

All this combine to make it a propaganda system.

 Rupert Murdock Owns:

Al Gore "An Inconvienient Truth" Trailer
It gets the message across, and is based on scientific evidence. The lesson of this story is that to save the planet is not to overthrown the richer. If we are over producing cO2. cO2 neutral is by buying an energy saving light bulb although this doesn't as you are still polluting. The solution to the world problems is to buy more things for example buy a hybrid vechical and energy light bulbs. The capitalist businesses are saying this and creating a pressing issue.
All different campaign groups have now started to use visual campaigns/communication.

But still the flat earthers:

The Guardian
The size of the balls reflect the size of the emissions for each country. They try to put out a solution to global warming. But they are always blocked by some countries, so until all countries agree nothing is ever going to be done about this.

Sustainability
The notion of sustainability is the one which everyone should be sympathetic with. Sustainability is effectively the part of the globalisation in ways of stopping the head long grace of the resources of fossil fuels. Also to allow societies to sustain themselvs in capitalist expansion. It is a funamental contradiction.

Sustainable Capitalism
BIOX fuel
This design which is addressing the problem. Although this is more expensive to produce and therefore only the rich buy it and there would also be less profit made form this.
It started to produce pollutants to effect the area and therefore causing more problems that what it is solving. Any idea of solving the problems of capitalism by capitalism is flawed from the start.

Effectively a new sexy market has emerged of a green market. The reason why McDonalds changed there scheme to green to make people think that they are ethical and indoctrinating a new market. The whole eco market is a total myth.

Effectively, as Papanek says that under a capitalist system is that things are manufactured to sell to people and its the media which plays a role in selling that to people.

This is AdBusters Black Spot Sneaker
You are effectively buying a shoe and therefore fighting capitalism. The way you solve capitalism is not buy making people to buy more things. You challenge it by the companies that are selling the products.

G20 Protests
This crisis is not caused by the people but this particular relief.

The solution is not through green consumtion.

Triangulation Task Five

The original first things first manifesto raises several important points about where the design industry is heading. The manifesto begins by criticising the long upheld idea that the techniques of advertising are the best way for visual communicators to utilise their talents, going on to explain that the market rewards this belief, with publications approving and therefore reinforcing this way of working. Garland denounces this waste of designers’ efforts on ‘trivial purposes’ giving such examples as the selling of cat food and striped toothpaste. He describes a ‘saturation point at which the high pitched scream of consumer selling is no more than sheer noise’ (Garland, K 1964) and goes on to promote the idea that there are more worthy uses for designers to apply their skills to, suggests the industry begins focusing efforts on ‘media through which we promote our trade, our education, our culture and our greater awareness of the world (Garland, K 1964). He stressed that he and the signatories were not advocating the abolition of consumer advertising but rather a change in priorities towards more worthwhile purposes.

This manifesto was updated with the help of Rick Poyner in order to be published in Adbusters in 2000. This version had not changed much from the original, other than a paragraph which was added about how many designers had become uncomfortable with the worlds perception of design, i.e. purely commercial work.. In this version it is suggested that designers who primarily work in advertising, marketing and brand development are ‘supporting an implicitly endorsing, a mental environment so saturated with commercial messages’ that to some extent they are ‘helping draft a reductive and immeasurably harmful code of public discourse.’ This version also stresses a higher level of urgency claiming that the problems outlined in the first version have only become worse due to a growth in global commercial culture, ‘consumerism is running uncontested; it must be challenged.’ (First Things First Manifesto, 2000)

The Manifesto has had mixed responses. Rick Poynor seemed to strongly agree with Garlands points in his over view and puts forward a strong argument in the manifesto’s favour. He commented that some of the signatories were well-established figures, such as Edward Wright and Anthony Froshaug who were successful typographers. (Poyner, R, 1999). Michael Bierut however seemed to feel entirely differently about the manifesto and the signatories and argued that most of the names of the signatories would be unfamiliar to most and suggested that their lack of success may well be the reason behind their support, he remarked ‘They’ve resisted manipulating who trudge the aisles of your local 7-eleven for the simple reason that they haven’t been invited to. A cynic then, might dismiss the impact of the manifesto as no more than that of witnessing a group of eunuchs take a vow of chastity.’ (Bierut, M. 1999). He also entertains the idea that because the manifesto implies that graphic designers have this huge responsibility and ability to better the world, the supporters are flattered, and ‘when it comes to graphic designers, flattery will get you everywhere’ Bierut, M. Poyner however points out that Garland had for a long time been trying in earnest to voice his opinions and better the world, for example he was a committed campaigner against the bomb – so it cannot be disputed that he did use graphic design for the purposes he was proposing others do, and believed in graphic designs ability to impact the world. Karen McCoy agreed that designers had forgotten this element of their work stating ‘We have trained a profession that feels political or social concerns are either extraneous to our work or inappropriate.’ She also pointed out that even corporate work was never devoid of political bias and described it as a decisive vote for economic considerations over other potential concerns. (Poyner, R, 1999)

The manifesto distinguished between design that communicates and informs such as books signs and educational aids and design that persuades, arguing that too many designers are concentrating their efforts on the latter, however Michael Bierut argued that design intended to persuade isn’t necessarily a bad thing claiming that these persuasive techniques have been used to create ‘some of the most effective work on behalf of social causes’ (Bierut, M, 1999) e.g the Guerilla Girls. He also suggested an element of jealousy influenced graphic designers contempt for the design world due to the clarity of the effect of advertising compared to the vagueness and immeasurability of the outcomes of graphic design.
Garland criticised design work for ‘trivial purposes’ i.e. selling such things as hair restorer and cigarettes but Bierut disputed the idea that these objects are undeserving of designers consideration – ‘What makes dog biscuit packaging an unworthy object of our attention, as opposed to say, a museum catalogue or some other cultural project? Don’t Dachshund owners deserve the same measure of beauty, intelligent and wit in their lives?’ (Bierut, M 1999)

Today graphic design is still viewed as a largely commercial field, but there are still people trying to change this. For example, visual communication degree courses have evolved to become more focused on bettering the world, rather than simply teaching young designers the technical skills necessary to go out into industry, ‘From a Utopian point of view, we are here to help define and build a better world through the development of skilled, aware, creative minds and appropriate action.’ Professor Neil Brody, Head of Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art. Because of this there are still at least some young people being taught that they can do more with their skills than just make things aesthetically pleasing.

There are still some visual communicators using their skills to educate the world about issues outside the commercial realm, such as graphic novelist Adbusters. There certainly scepticism surrounding graphic designers capability to change the world, but there is hope as well. ‘‘Once we’ve acknowledged that designers have certain inherent limitations as message bearers, the question which must be asked is: “Can graphic designers actually do something to change the world? ‘The answer is “yes”, if one disregards the fact that there are very limited outlets for this kind of work, and accepts the fact that being socially responsible means taking the initiative oneself, dealing rationally with issues, and having a commitment to a specific cause.’

Purdey's Further Research: Bottle Design

This is a very creative bottle design, this is for a natural boost just like the Purdey's. They have used a pink background due to the target audience being women so therefore this would attract a specific audience.

The lettering of this bottle is very organic, I like the use of the colour to represent the flavour of the drink, this is something I will incorporate into my design. I like the use of the leaf for the tag with information on this could have my riddle on one side and then the point of contact on the other.

I like the use of natural organic drawing, The unfinished rough edges remind me of an untouched natural substance. The colours are also very calming, although, I don't think it is a drink bottle and if it is then this is a very weird shape that would make it difficult to drink out of.

This is a very clinical design, which is something I found in my research that people keep aware from as they look chemically mix and therefore people don't buy them due to that reason. Although, this is more informational than Purdey's it still looked developed & too clinical.

This one really caught my eye, I liked the rough lettering to create the title of the drink. they have made the drink appealing. Lip smacking makes you want to buy it to try it... The use of the different lettering reminds me of the different ingredients added to make the drink. The shape of the bottle is innovative but I don't think this would work practically in stores in fridges.

I think the route I am going to go down is to work with rough lettering to connote the natural substances and the vector drawings of relevant objects...

Research into Other Finishing Books

Research into Other Finishing Books.

I like the exposed stitching at the side due to the bright colours standing out against the blank white cover. I like the debossing also, due to it been a blind deboss and therefore the use of the light is needed.

I am liking the screen printed pattern onto the book binding material. The button just adds a little touch. I am thinking about doing hard back book due to I am wanting it to be a long lasting and professional book.

I like the front cover of this book due to the presentation of debossing and also the die cut so you can see the screen printed patterns below. I like the hard back bound as well. I like the sizing of the book and think it is a good sizing. I don't want the book to be A4 but not too small.

I like the use of the brightly colour belly band. I like the way they have use a plain grey background with the screen printed title then the bright colour to highlight the subject.

I think I am wanting to deboss my cover too as all the examples I have seen so far seem to look very good. Although, I think this material is leather and therefore you won't get the same desired effect although, all the ones above still look good, especially on the white cover.

This has just been perfect binded with a card cover. I like how they have embossed the cover also. I think that idea of the overlaying the title over the emboss also creates a good effect. The detail is very good quality too so I think this has been created through a copper plate rather than laser cut wood.
