Simple typography decisions really effect the connotation been said. Not just about words it about how its situated.
Typography exists in middle of visuall and verbal. Understanding how a letterform is related to a sound and this sould be focused on our decision of appearance.
Typography is a system that frames another system. language is a organised system of communication but what typography is the a communication that can change how it is communicated. Typography can effect the way we read so forth example speed or accent.

Late age of print: Mid 15th Century
The reason why it is invented is the Gutenberg printing press: This is the first time that the first mass production could happen. Before there was only caligraphy for novels and terefore a slow process. For the first time literature and knowledge is now widely avaliable to a mass audience. Prior to the age of print nothing happened it was the 'dark ages' after the fall of great empire in Roman.
Roman Empire- the reason why we have serif on modern tye now is that these letters was originally chisseled so have to dig in slowly.
Medieval book: Hand written script- First typeface used is Guttenberg Gothis Script based on medievel writting. This is sometimes know as blackletter
But then blackletter was taken over by humanist typefaces. as they had a great type of element as is was more readable and they used a lighter colour due to the advancement in printing.
The process of reproduction was mechanical although they still wanted some human element within this type. This was called Jenson as it was used rarely used and if they are used is that its used to signify something historic.
The proportions of humanist typefaces are in proportion with the human form.
Centaur is a new typeface based on Jenson and here it has the slight ascender on the crossbar of the 'e'.
15th century (venice)
Explotion of typography as its where type takes hold as a type discipline. These are called 'old style' in this centuryas its started to emerge and become less script.
All of these fonts are very easily found on our computers and if you was to use one of these you are showing class, tradition etc... Our typeface for our college used to be palatino as they was going for a tradition legacy.
Mid 18th century (england)
Typographer William Haslong a trasitional font contrast between thick & think strokes. This is an ongoing revolution. The changes are acutely noticed.
A stressful Time: Humanist most hand written. Old style is development, and traditional is the new style. These have developed through thicker & thinner strokes.
Didone Typefaces: The modern typeface is most influence as Bodoni. Modern was the first experimental typefaces. These get used in fashion all the time therefore didone is the essence of style & fashion. Didone is elegant cause of this ultra airline stroke.One type can become sinonimious with a style. Acccepted language of fashion.
Victorian era: Slab Serif/Egyptian- 1800
Not because it looks like Egyptian hieroglyphs. Its due tot he oriental look. Fat font which shouts out at you. Its an era of mass production and used for headlines so they dont get lost within the city.

Modernist is sans serif and is not hystoric in any form.
In the modern era which Times New Roman as it aimed to represent the greatness of the roman empire.
Just like the nazi was doing which took over the blackletter font.
Copper Black: The font of easy jet. Warm embrace from 20s.
Helvetica: Modernist font.
Arial: Difference to helvetica is the G Q R.
Postmodern era: attempt to handdrawn type rather than mechanical. Grunge typography which is type which is illegible.
Conclusion
Type comminicates it speaks not just language
