COP 3 Lecture 3

Resolving Your Research Project (Academic Conventions)

Introduction - What your going to address & how your going to address it?

Certain ways to show your have come to an informed decision.
Academic conventions, referencing and & acknowledging where these ideas have come from...

At this level you are expected to be able to:
Demonstrate a critical knowledge of practice.
Apply theory to practice - You been an original thinker.
Analyse relevant material - own analysis & thinking.

Am I evidencing that I am analysis & critical knowledge of my practice.

Deep engagement with the topic.

Bloom's Hierachy
Gaining an understanding of a topic is at the bottom, just knowledge.
Comprehension is understanding how facts relate to each other.
Application is taking that understanding & applying it to something.

Anderson & Pohl
They flipped the top 2 and thought that creation is doing something with that knowledge.

They need synthesis & critiquing.

Surface Approach
Caused by a lack of investigation.
You should avoid this...

Passive acceptance - do you challenge ideas & unpick them?
Link all the narrative together
Is your writing tracing theories & creating underlying patterns.
Independant engagement with material.
Critical & thoughtful idea & information - thoughtful!
Relates theory research to won experience.
Structured around logic & sees a bigger picture.
Ongoing preparation & reflection - Evidence of intellectual engagement with module.

How do I evidence deeper learning..
Everything you say has to be substantiated with evidence. You can't make a point without showing that that engagement has come from process of research, this is done through quotes.
Make an argument but back it up..
You need to make it concise & direct... No rhetorical or conversational writing styles.
This is a representation of a middle class family because of this....
Don't use uncertain language.
Aim for shorter sentences rather than longer sentences.
Avoid repeating the same word.
Avoid waffle.

Make a point
Back it up
Make a point
Link it up
Back it up.

Avoid contractions & abbrevations
Avoid vague terms.

It has been observed in this....
Considerations has been given to...
The suggestion here is that...

Introduction
Summaries the question & how the main body is going to work.

Main body gets more defined throughout chapters.

Conclusion will echo the introduction.

After conclusion doesn't count but everything else does.

Thermal bound
1.5 line spaced apart from quotes more than two lines.

Use long quotes to evidence close reading, communication skills.

But also short to summarise point from different writers.

AVOID NEGATIVITY

Project Self Assessment
Give a brief summary so far...
Write down the major aims of the project
Comment on time management
Do you know what your final project will look like?
What steps you going to take?
What areas of project you worried about?
How are you best going to use them..
Set targets!
Don't priorities practical or written element.

Crit & Developing on Practical

So after a deeper thought and the practical crit.... In which I found the feedback quite informative. Although, I do feel I gave more feedback than what I received.

They thought that the idea of the pass the parcel would not be a good idea. This is because although it relates to my dissertation in the theory that people like to destroy things in order to find something interesting as they are intrigued what is inside!

Although, they did like the idea of the DIY kit... although they thought this was more about the instructions rather than the design been interactive itself. As a DIY is usually interactive anyway.

I have thought about my practical further, and deepened my knowledge. I think that it would be best if I did an interactive poster. This is simple idea which is crucial with the short amount of time I have left. I could also develop this into an exhibition, which would further synthesis with my dissertation due to the the creative engagement model, focusing mainly around the engagement of an exhibition.

Looking Through Hands On Book for Practical

This book, is perfect for my dissertation. Although it hasn't given me much contextual information it has shown be many more beautiful avenues that interactive design can do.

This book has given me many more ideas for my practical.....

The interactive element of this book has kept me on my toes while interacting as it has made me go back to the sticker page to find out more about the project if I am interested in it. This is a very clever idea, takes me back to my younger years when I used to place stickers in the relevant places in magazines etc....

A few examples of the reason why I love this book are below and why this book is so good for my practical will be obvious...

This is where the musical instrument posters idea came from as I wanted to make a DIY drum...

This is where the idea of creating a origami came from... I like the idea of having the line on the poster to follow, it gives it an authentic look.

First COP3 Tutorial

I took lots of articles I had been reading and made notes on along with things I think are interesting. Also ideas for primary research.

So overall my tutorial was very positive & made it much clearer for me overall.

At first she asked me what my working title was...

I started looking at my notes and she said nooo, without looking at them so I explained about the problem of defining tactile design etc...

We then got onto interactive design & how people can take this in different ways so I need to explain that in my introduction...

She told me that the hierarchy of my title is important & told me to think about what I want to focus on?
The tactile design
Interactivity
Human contact with design.

I need to make a prolog, which is why you have chosen this title? Why its important to you! Why your into it?

I need to write an intro for the next tutorial in 2 weeks. Within the intro I need to tell them what you are going to tell them.

She explained that I will probably have around 4/5 chapters. In the fourth I should bring in a theory. Then write a conclusion and finish it with a case study.

Conclusion - Tell them what you told them! Nothing new! Talk about aura!

Tactile - area?

1st chapter - what you think interactive design is?
Interactivity - definition, but I am focusing on this because...

Theory - Triangulation (4th chapter)
Walter Benjamin - (Aura) What stuff is made out of?
Martin Mccluan - Medium & message.

During the tutorial I told Amber about my current idea of emailing studios with a questions suck as what do you think interactivity is? And they will send a picture back etc... And she told me this would be a great idea and this has lead to the plan of my essay.

Around about what I will talk about in my chapters:

1st Chapter - My Thought
2nd Chapter - Others Thoughts
3rd Chapter - Comparison
4th Chapter - Theory
Conclusion - Aura

To finish off the tutorial Amber told me I need to be more confident with my approach, as my ideas are strong but I am presenting them like they are GCSE level. So next time I need to go in and be confident with my ideas & tell her what I have done, rather than questioning myself constantly.

2 Weeks time: Prolog & Introduction written, also primary research list & email ready to send?
  (MILESTONE)

Initial Research - Practical

Interactive Poster Research

This is the best poster ever! I love how the onlooker delivers the message themselves by using the task within the message. People who don't like getting their hands dirty won't complete this experience and therefore that is a good thing, as this is a personal message "us" and therefore wouldn't apply to a person doing the task because they have been told to.

I think this is cool, because the development will be gradual and passers by will notice different words just by natural instinct. Therefore, different pens at use etc... it will create a very unique and individual design outcome.

This is a very clever design, by using the stock to deliver a sound and then relating this back to an everyday experience. Therefore everyone will have some connection to at least one of these posters, as this has been produced inline with the hearing sense, therefore this will more than likely bring back a memory of a time when this was used within there life. This was produced for a sound company.

This is a posters to promote an african music festival.. The use of the colouring in of the african masks will allow the onlooker, to take more time to take all the information in and also will allow each poster to be indvidual....

Again, a similar aspect as to Kelli Anderson... This is using different cones of paper to create different noises. This is a poster for a movie making competition....

I like idea of having the audience to open a door to see whats behind it... again the idea that covering up creates curiosity, and therefore by doing the task will make the message more memorable.

This is a good idea, as they use the audience to reveal the picture and therefore the meaning of the poster campaign. I like how passers by will be intrigued as it should change everyday therefore the use of repetition will make it more memorable.

I like the use of the paper folding into something to reveal a message, this would be very hard to layout and tricky to line up but, I like how the message builds up as the interaction develops therefore keeping them engaged.

This is an amazing poster, using the sense of touch with the sense of sound, which has been developed from technology. You do have to download an app for this poster although I do think this will be worth it in the end...

Previously Failed Digital Campaign

Finding digital campaigns that have failed have not been found easily as this is not a common outcome due to the digital campaign but mainly down to the way they have been translated to the audience, through the concept etc...

Blockbuster - No late fees.
Holiday Inn - Transsexual (Cheap rooms)
NatWest - NatYes Campaign

From the lack of failed digital campaigns I have decided that the poster will be my strongest options and therefore this is something I am going to look into next... What concept can I have behind a interactive poster?

Thinking About My Practical

I think the time has come to start thinking about my practical, up to now I have just focused on my dissertation. Although, really I should be working on both to make sure I get a good synthesis.

Firstly, I am going to think of possible things I could do for my practical:
  • It has to be interactive & engaging with the audience.
  • Follow the engagement model.
  • Be directed towards the kinesthetic learning theory.

Possiblilties....
Redo a failed digital interactive campaign.
DIY KIT: Make your own drum.
Pass the parcel - idea of something hiding behind something and destroying it
Interactive book.
Interactive Poster Campaign
Interactive Exhibition.
Wreck-it Journal - different outcome everytime.
Everyday elements - one side a picture other side the real thing.... about tactility.
Something for sighted users so they could experience the non-sighted world.
Window Installation.

The main ones that are standing out to me at the moment are...
Redo a failed digital interactive campaign.
Interactive Poster Campaign.

So these are the two I am going to do some further research into....

Primary Research Ideas For Dissertation

Touching & feeling experiment, this would be to say keywords whilst caressing the object of choice. This will allow the words to come out freely and no direction as these will be purely from what the brain thinks when touching the object eg. sharp, strong, scary, cold.

Scent experiment, from research it says how you can smell and scent and it will take you back to distant memories. Therefore, see if there is any correlation between smells etc...

Sending out a questionnaire over print & digital to all three years on graphic design. This will allow me collate results in which will be the most natural to them, as well as gathering data about there thoughts on interactive design.

Send a simple question sent over email, such as what do you first think of when you hear interactive design? To studios and designers, then allow them to reply in image and text. This can therefore be analysed.

INTERVIEW (STRUCTURED)
Kate Moross

Julien Vallee
Yulia Broadskaya
Fieldwork
Robot Food
See me design.

OBSERVATION
Have boxes to tick when they do something... eg. type on there mac..
Given them a small one hour brief see what they do first?

QUESTIONNAIRE
Send a simple question to studios and students to see when I get back.. Tell them the responce doesn't have to be an explanation can be an image etc...
