Visiting Yoke Exhibition

I went to the yoke exhibition opening tonight to see if my work had been used in the exhibition. I didn't notice my work for a while as they put it on a horizontal line so was difficult to read. In the end my friend found it and pointed it out to me. Which I wasn't too bothered about because they did mention that they could manipulate it in anyway they wanted to suit the layered design.

Here is the posters that was put up & around college. There was some confusion about this at first due to the small space they are using and they mentioned putting the prints up in A3. With the amount of people on the list we wasn't sure if this is the people who have entered or if these are the people within the exhibition.

This is my printed unfortunately they wasn't printed in the A3 but I was pleased to see my work on the wall even though, it was only in A5.

Theory into Practical Ideas.

I started to read back through my essay today, to see what options I had to take within my practical side of COP. I felt this was the best way to decided due to the need of synthesis. Here are some parts of my essay I believe that I could expand upon within a practical piece:

ONE
We are all consumers of goods & services, but many exaggerate the need of consumption. This is due to the idea that many are incontrollably buying unnecessarily, almost like an addiction. The image of an addiction is the idea of being dependent on a habit for example, taking drugs. An addiction has very influential power which results them into changing into someone else completely, which is offen referred to as an addict.

I thought, this could be good to design consumerism in a drug-like way... I started thinking about this and how I would delve within this although, I don't think this would be as easy as it sounds I was thinking about putting my essay as the instruction leaflet you get within the box, but this I thought would haven't have much to go by and therefore would not pull up my essay grade.

 TWO
The use of subliminal messaging has been used in the Chanel advert. This printed advertisement was printed within high glossy magazines, such as Vogue & Bazaar. In which, both of these magazines present Chanel No5 as a required accessory for every women’s feminity. Also, the quote, which is headlining the page, is stating that every woman loves Chanel. These are both robust statements and therefore portraying an underlying message, saying that if you don’t want this product then you are less of a woman and if you don’t own the perfume then your womanly qualities are inferior to others in the possession of the fragrance

My second option was to re-advertise a brand of perfume but in a way that would be honest due to fragrances of perfume creating a different smell on each individual. So therefore my caption would be "spray me, to smell me, your what makes me!"

 THREE
There are many diagrams trying to explain the consumer behavior, in which I am going to vaguely compare.

This is leading to the option of creating my own consumer behavior model by combining all three. This would be on one large A2 poster which will be largely illustrated a spider diagram style.

 FOUR
The act of shopping, now has become an answer to all problems within lifes difficulties, we seek solutions in shops to feel a sense of satisfaction. Just after the 11/9 outrage George W. Bush told Americans to get over the trauma & go back to normal, in which he found no better words than “go back shopping”. The ease of the action of disposing one object of consumption in order to replace it with a “new & improved one.

Another option would be to create a publication of the tricks that businesses put in place to make sure they are bagging their daily targets. I think this is my strongest idea so far and this would  need further research to put tips from secondary research.

Theory into Practice Briefing.

Using your experiences of the modules to date, produce a practical investigation that explores your own critical observations, thoughts and opinions relating to the context of your own developing creative practice. You should aim to visually communicate your informed findings through the selection, evaluation and presentation of appropriate primary and secondary source material, visual research and design development. In order to focus your research you are asked to select, consider and explore one of the following research themes.

Sustainability

Modernism

Propaganda

Social Impact

Consumerism - This is the one mine fits within.

Visual Language

BRIEF

You will be required to present and submit evidence of the following:

Literature Search & Review - This document will identify specific research activities, sources and methods through which you will develop an increasingly focused investigation of clearly identified questions relating to your chosen theme. You should include sources from a broad range of subjects, media and locations including, texts, articles, websites, films, lectures, events etc.
Research & Development - You will need to demonstrate a pro-active approach to primary and secondary research practical investigation and content development/selection. Research activities, design development and contextual references should be documented on your design context blog and labelled withe the module code and and studio brief number
Production & Presentation - your response to the brief should be communicated through the production of appropriate graphic products relevate to your content, audience and individual creative concerns. Issues relating to function, context and tone of voice should be demonstrated through the ongoing documentation practical and technical development.

Background / Considerations

Having selected a theme you should aim to identify why you are interested in it and what you want to find out about it. The more specific you are at this stage the better. If you are too vague you will spend time reading and researching for no reason. It is worth - at this stage - formulating your initial interests in to a few short questions, and identifying specific research activities, sources and material that will help you find the answers.

Your response to this brief should reflect your understanding of the relevant theories, principles, concepts and process explored throughout the context of practice modules so far.

The research that you have undertaken in response to the study task so far should form the basis of a practical and conceptual investigation of content, format and media in relation to appropriate audiences.

Your resolution can be print-based, screen-based or web-based, 2d 3d or 4d. It could explore the relationship between a range of media, formats and products or focus specifically on one method of delivery.

Consider the broader social, cultural, political and historical contexts of your subject matter whilst exploring their relationship to your own creative, technical and professional concerns as a designer.

The format of your final resolution should reflect your increasingly specialist understanding of graphic design and your own emerging creative practice and concerns.

A body practical, contextual &theoretical research & development documented on your Design Context Blog.
A clearly identified and resolved design solution In the form o fan appropriately formatted, and produced graphic product.
A written evaluation of your work in relation to the module content.

Essay Feedback

I had a meeting with richard abut my essay, he told me itwas a strong essay. The content was of a good research background. Although my organisation of the essay was not logical. He told me to intergrate the example figures rather than comparing them against each other one after another.

He also told me that I needed to sort out my referencing as it was all different, I think is because of me not remembering how to do the referencing properly from last year. So I had to do some further research about this.

Also he told me to try and do some triangulation within the essay and maybe also add another writer to compare & contrast.

I am going to try and do all of these if I have the time, although, I may just try and spend longer on the practical in hopes that this will pull the grade up. As writing is not my strong point.

Secondary Research: Morrison Other Elements

So I started by looking at their website, which they have recently released. This has had good reviews, they have held back for quite a while. Apparently due to them making sure the best is served etc....

What makes there website different from other grocery stores?

So they pride on themselves not give substitutions as this is what customers get annoyed about with other retailers website. On-time deliveries you can rely on them, they believe they would always be late and only 5% of deliveries was late in March 2014.

They pride on giving their customers fresh food, they now have a rosette award in which they have people checking the freshness of the veg and they regularly update there awards for each fruit!

You can actually book a slot rather than them giving you one, with only a minimal charge from £1.

You can shop online, so you can shop if you have a busy lifestyle and order to be delivered for when you get home.

There is different categories, the new produce they have, the offers and your favourites as this get stored in your account and therefore if you get the same things every week most will be saved in your favourites which is very handy.

They have recently opened M locals. This is small Morrisons stores, This is very within the same branding as Morrisons and the simple vector images are clean and precise.

I checked into the history & what they want in the future of Morrisons, this was very interesting and gave me information that I didn't know such as Morrisons started in Bradford as a market stall.

I then went onto the employment website, I like this video they have produced for their future employees to watch. I like the use of the script fonts, this lead me to believe they are trying to update their look. I also look at their values and things like that. As although Sam is very aware of these I didn't and I believed this could have been some important information that could be crucial to my design.

This is their childrens range, this is totally different to Morrisons itself and gave me the idea that we don't really have to follow the look of Morrisons due to other events not taking this upon board within store.

This really caught my eye, I really like the use of the paper sculpting for the imagery. This is something which is within my area and therefore, I will be mentioning this to Sam about this style of design within their imagery.

The use of the Morrisons font is still in contact although the colours are not kept apparent. Again the same branding has not been used so therefore this is a possibility that we don't have to use Morrisons primary colours.

This is a blog, in which they create recipes from their own produce and make them live on the blog so people can repeat them and therefore pushing the sales of own produce. I like the use of the colour scheme. Again the logo is kept the same but the colour scheme is not present.

Yoke Dialogue Brief

So after Eve & Nathan came in to talk to us today about their exhibition I decided to go on to their website to find out more...

These points have all been taken from their website, it was very detailed in the hand-in although the direction was very vague. Although this can be a good think it can also go against me as well due to the vast amount of areas you can go down. I am going to try and go down one path and concentrate on one only!

I like the idea of using acting as dialogue. I think that a quote form Romeo & Juliet would be appropriate but not too obviously in the meaning of dialogue.

I like the idea of writing on a notepad. Because a lot people write down there feelings rather than express them and either in a diary or doodle them down. Doodles can say a lot about a person and how they are feeling! This could be something I am going to playing with.

I like these abstract drawings this could connote direction the direct that people take to create dialogue do you revert it and don't want it or do you go out of your way to demand it?
