ISTD Primary Research

The Oldest Sweet Shop In England.

I visited the shop in Harrogate, to see the shop in first hand, these are the photos I took and I asked the person behind the counter a few questions. Unfortunately it wasn't the owner but it was her daughter, so I still got some very good answers.

I asked them:

What sweets do you sell the most?
Sweet Tobacco
Liquorice Sticks
Blueberry Bonbons...

Would you consider on rebranding?
She said that her mum doesn't want to rebrand but she would like one..

So I said, if I coul rebrand so it was traditional but with a twist of modern is that the style you would like.

And she said she would like to keep the authentic look but with an update.

Then I asked her what things I should redesign:
Uniforms
Bags - just use bog standard see through ones.
Sweetie jars
& many more...

Elegant Beauty Salon Research

I like the embed of the letters and numbers, I like how you can see the flow of the 2 from the b even though there is detachment. The colours are very bold and not too girly. I like the aqua colour which works well with the grey. I think that the bold with the thin copy is balanced well.

I like the good balance of this logo. The bock colour with the script & the thin type elbow. The script font is bold and this is a small logo and could work without the copy.

I like the use of the hand rendered font, although it could also look childish. This is probably due to the heart. I like the thin type with a strong bond between all the letters.

I like this due to the strong bold with only one letter. Although, it has been manipulated with the swirl to make it more interesting. This could be a good logo standing alone. I like the use of the mix of serifs and curved serifs.

This again has just one letter which has been manipulated to create a logo the balance is equal and is a good square which works well within logos. The year i wouldn't put onto the logo as this shows that the company is not very well established although they are going for an old vintage look through the font & the colours.

I like the attachment to an vector of an image. This could then work stand alone as well as with the font. Although, this doesn't scream out to me a beauty logo without the title underneath of health spa retreat?

Appointment Cards

This type of appointment cards seem to be trending at the moment, but personally I think that it is a waste of space. I think that the space could be used more efficiently for more than one use. I do like the color scheme of the bottom one I think the blue & the green works very well.

This is a very innovative way but also would be more cost due to the insert double sided and the double sided leaflet. I also like the colour scheme again although, I don't have that choice due to the bland colour scheme. This would be for more a high end salon rather than a salon starting out.

I like the use of the break up of the page been date & time only as this is the only information you need to note. I don't think this is meant to be an appointment card due to the title this is not a reminder as you wouldn't relate this to getting your nails done.

Pricing List

I like the idea of having a small price list & a big A3 for putting on the wall. I think I am going to make it the same size of the business card so it can fit in their purse.

This would only work if the salon was going a lot of treatments as this has many pages.

This is a very badly laid out pricing list. Its hard to focus and leads your eye all over the place. I like the large titles with the small bodycopy. Although I have just realised this is just a list not a pricing list as this does not have prices on.

I like the idea of doing a square leaflet as it adds some definition to the list without costing more in the long run. I think the bottom would be very similar to mine due to the simple layout. I do like the break down of the treatments on the browncow one, as this makes it easy to scan through and find the treatment you want.

Gift Vouchers

I like the layout of this gift voucher with the main focus been on the name of the receiver and then all the little info at the bottom.

I liked the idea of adding a ribbon to make the gift voucher look more special rather than just a piece of paper in an envelope. Then I thought about adding a bow digitally rather than creating more cost for Hannah.

ISTD Secondary Research

So I started my secondary research by searching for branding of sweet shops online. And there wasn't much that came up so I just started to research sweet shops and see what came up with then got inspiration from that.

I really like the use of random objects in these they are very child like although they are very clinical. I like the use of block colour on opposite side and thin sans serif font. Although, you can't really tell that this is a sweetie company form the business card and this is what is suppose to be promoting the company from a glance.

I like the use of the stock as a colour on these, although, they are not fun like sweet shops are suppose to be. I think that an inject of colour is needed to be placed into them. I like the illustration of the cupcake. This looks a very expensive sweet shop with the gold edging etc...

I like the use of the sweets to create illustrations. This is showing the play within the candy. I like the use of the bright colours with he blank background. The print behind is a good mixed media and works well together.

I like these jars as they are different to the rest of the others I have seen although, I don't like how you can't see the sweets from the front view.  I don't like all the different jars have different colours as not every sweet would be possible to have a different colour.

I like the use of the polka dots, I think these add an interesting effect although, these aren't an exact circle but they still look good. And they match the hand rendered effect type.

This is the design spread across all the stationary. This is all the same design just put onto different nets in different sizes. I like the use of the brown paper bags. I am not too sure about the bag as the handle doesn't look very strong and looks a bit weird how wide it is in level with the edge of the bag.

I think I need to create labels for pic & mix and to label different things under covers. Theses are simple and hand written. I could just create an outline so the titles can be written when needs be.

I love these jars. Although, I do think it would be hard to read the font on the jars since it wouldn't always be bright colour from example liquorice is black so it would be black on black.

I like the idea of using stickers to hold down the fold down of the bag. Although I do like the salmon pink and black. The bag does need a base, as then the sweets will fit nicely. The bags I have seen so far have just been flat and no bottoms therefore you can't fit a lot of sweets in them.

I liked these quotes as soon as I seen them. They are very tongue & cheek and I like hoe they are all personally for each sweet. These where for a branding of a sweet making company rather than a sweet shop. I like the use of the image as the colour of the text as well as the background image.

I like the idea of creating a canvas bag. The simplistic drawing of the sweets work well. Even thought the detail doesn't cover the full bag it works well & I think that if it did cover the full bag then it would not be as nice.

I like the simple line drawing, The different colours are working OK with each other but I can see it working with just two colours. Black for the outline and pink to colour block in. I like the use of different sweets in each and how they they have shown them through there typical features.

As soon as I seen this packaging I loved it. This could be for gifts that are ordered but this is not something that would be efficient for the shop keeper to wrap it up like this every time someone bought something. The colour scheme is very appropriate for the theme of these as it is for halloween but I do like the mixture of colours and think that if the symbols wasn't there it wouldn't be too much connoting halloween.

I like the way this leaflet opens out. This is what I would like to do if I end up designing a leaflet I like how i could centralise the 100 year to make it main focus and have the information either in a timeline around it or just having random points around it. This would then get put in there bags when they buy something.

Hand Drawn Type Cards Research

I like the use of the mixed typefaces. I thought about going down the route of a valentines day card so these are the cards I started looking at firstly. Although, I think the colours are pretty drab and they need to be brighter.

I love the simplicity of this lettering, it is so attractive just from the typeface and layout. Doesn't need colour. I love the layout and the hierarchy of the words. The stroke size changes like a calligraphy style, this is what makes it so appealing I believe.

I like the way they have used simple type for simple language.

I like the way they have created the lettering around each other and used highlights of colours only, with black outline.

I love the use of the change of colour horizontally, this is a water colour effect and it works very effectively with this font.

I like the use of this, it is obviously not rendered to be perfect to represent the hand rendered look. I like the background image of the squares, it shows how it has been built up in its rawist form.

I like the colouring style on this is looks like it has been stenciled because it is so crisp for a water colour painting. Again compliments on the stroke weight changing throughout.

I started looking at different quotes that I could use on my card as this would be the basis of the card & how the typeface would develop.

This is very floral and would work very well for a mothers day card or a woman's birthday card.

This lettering has had the counters removed. I do like this look but I think the target market would not suit this lettering, as it is for more of a younger audience.

I like the chalkboard effect, this is something I would like to learn the effect of how to do on photoshop. So this is something I could do to push myself to be able to learn how to create this effect digitally by mocking up.

I thought this was a pretty funny quote but again I didn't think it was appropriate for the market due to this could be offensive for some people therefore can see it in a boutique card shop rather than Marks & Spencers.

I like the use of a continuous line typeface. The use of the stock with the white fill within the dot of the I.

I like the use of the layout been jusified as it gives a clean edge and boundary but I also like the very scripty fonts maybe I could give a mix of the two...
