Where Do I Stand?

Where Do I Stand?

Manifesto

A manifesto is a written public declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government.
A manifesto usually accepts a previously published opinion or public consensus and/or promotes a new idea with prescriptive notions for carrying out changes the author believes should be made. It often is political or artistic in nature, but may present an individual's life stance. Manifestos relating to religious belief are generally referred to as creeds.

Conditional Design
A manifesto for artists and designers.

Through the influence of the media and technology on our world, our lives are increasingly characterized by speed and constant change. We live in a dynamic, data-driven society that is continually sparking new forms of human interaction and social contexts. Instead of romanticizing the past, we want to adapt our way of working to coincide with these developments, and we want our work to reflect the here and now. We want to embrace the complexity of this landscape, deliver insight into it and show both its beauty and its shortcomings.

Our work focuses on processes rather than products: things that adapt to their environment, emphasize change and show difference.
Instead of operating under the terms of Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Media Art or Sound Design, we want to introduce Conditional Design as a term that refers to our approach rather than our chosen media. We conduct our activities using the methods of philosophers, engineers, inventors and mystics.

Give a s**t manifesto: This is a manifesto to make young designers start thinking about the world they inhabit and the influence and responsibility they wield with their work. This is was a very interesting read for me, as I didn't really understand why we was doing about politics etc...

What do we mean by politics, society, culture and history ?

We was told to go into the studio and get into pairs, we had to divide a piece of paper into 4 columns and had to write 10 words of what we thought and came into our minds when POLITICS, SOCIETY, HISTORY & CULTURE. We was told the word and then had 2 minutes to write the 10 things we thought of and write them down individually. I found this quite hard when it was politics & society as I didn't know exactly what he meant. But history & society I found quite easily.

COLUMN PICTURE
Then we was told to make 8 sections and break down the words we had wrote into neg & positive things most of these where put in both columns cause they could be both positive & negative in different meanings.
COLUMN NEG & POS
We was then told that spider diagrams are very good as a thought of process as you are doing word association rather than been informed by your first word. You will find you go to one side of the page and keep going from one leg rather than lots from the centre. Therefore this can be more helpful as it gives your a good order you your thought process. And in most cases give you more than lists.

Further Research & Opinion Task
POLITICS

  • The activities associated with the governance of a country or area, especially the debate between parties having power: the party quickly gained influence in French politics thereafter he dropped out of active politics
  • the activities of governments concerning the political relations between states: in the conduct of global politics, economic status must be backed by military capacity
  • the academic study of government and the state: [as modifier]: a politics lecturer
  • a particular set of political beliefs or principles: people do not buy their paper purely for its politics
  • The principles relating to or inherent in a sphere or activity, especially when concerned with power and status: the politics of gender
  • Activities aimed at improving someone’s status or increasing power within an organization: yet another discussion of office politics and personalities

I agree strongly with the voting system in our country as i think that every one has an equal voice and therefore only one is elected at one time. I don't believe in aristocracy as i believe that if you have worked hard for your money you should be able to keep it. Although, i believe that some professions do get paid too much for their job for example footballers, they don't save lifes but get paid more than doctors etc... I believe that I am very central within politics as i believe that every one should have equal rights but also have a private ownership, as no one would work hard and do more than others if you didn't receive something back from it. Although, politics is a very complicated subject and goes into much deeper detail that I know about, although I do think its an interesting subject, but very subjective.

 HISTORY

  • The study of past events, particularly in human affairs: medieval European history
  • the past considered as a whole: letters that have changed the course of history
  • The whole series of past events connected with a particular person or thing: the history of the Empire a patient with a complicated medical history
  • An eventful past: the group has quite a history
  • A past characterized by a particular thing: his family had a history of insanity
  • A continuous, typically chronological, record of important or public events or of a particular trend or institution: a history of the labour movement
  • A historical play: Shakespeare’s comedies, histories, and tragedies

I think that having a knowledge of the past as it gives you experiences and how the world has evolved from the events. I think it gives you sense of empathy and therefore makes you more thankful for what you having knowing about events such as WW1. History has involvement in everything, even design. Graphic Design has been a big part of the way it is today. From the advancements of the press to the typewriter.

CULTURE

  • The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively: 20th century popular culture
  • A refined understanding or appreciation of culture: men of culture
  • The ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society: Afro-Caribbean culture [count noun]: people from many different cultures
  • [with modifier] the attitudes and behaviour characteristic of a particular social group: the emerging drug culture
  • Biology the cultivation of bacteria, tissue cells, etc. in an artificial medium containing nutrients: the cells proliferate readily in culture
  • A preparation of cells obtained by culture: the bacterium was isolated in two blood cultures
  • The cultivation of plants: this variety of lettuce is popular for its ease of culture

verb

[with object] Biology
maintain (tissue cells, bacteria, etc.) in conditions suitable for growth: several investigators have attempted to culture biliary cells

I think culture is an amazing way of life. There are so many different cultures which host many different beliefs etc... I think cultures should be respected even if we don't see how it would benefit society. I have never been christened into a religion and therefore I do not have any culture beliefs, I respect all religious beliefs and other cultures. As i went to a catholic school, I have been given an indepth knowledge of others cultures & why it important to others.

SOCIETY

  • The aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community: drugs, crime, and other dangers to society
  • The community of people living in a particular country or region and having shared customs, laws, and organizations: the ethnic diversity of British society [count noun]: modern industrial societies
  • A specified section of society: no one in polite society uttered the word
  • The aggregate of people who are fashionable, wealthy, and influential, regarded as forming a distinct group in a community: [as modifier]: a society wedding
  • A plant or animal community: the analogy between insect society and human city is not new
  • An organization or club formed for a particular purpose or activity: [in names]: the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
  • The situation of being in the company of other people: she shunned the society of others.

I think that issues such as ethnicity & race inequality is moving forward within our society, as the same it has with gender and mainly no inequalities with gender in today's day & age. I think that poverty should not be an issue within our society, although more needs to be done to push them more to stay in education & getting a job rather than leaving and therefore setting yourself up for living in poverty. I think everyone abuses the environment as we don't use enough sustainable materials. Although, I do think this is also a subjective subject, but I think inequality should be abolished and people should be pushed to become better and become better within their life. The world should be a stricter place.
