Democratic Lecture

Democratic Lecture

Lets get back to basics: What is Graphic Design?
A&B

Logical Response
Form follows function

Emotional
Trying to get an emotional connection not apply to brain but applying to your heart.

Work out which one you are.

Branding
People dont understand the context of things. Its all about context you need to understand what branding means and what your trying to do, and the best way to do.
Make your own opinion.

A portfolio is for life, not just for interviews
The porfolio lives with you.
You have to design so your happy with it and you can jusify your opinion. As not everyone will like it even if you have the best portfolio ever.
Let the portfolio answer all of the questions and answer them visually.
Take pictures that adds to your design that it doesn't do it on its own.
Don't regurgitate trends and styles.

Do placements as you need to know how it works.
There is new expectations
Not just about software, you won't know hardly anything about the software when starting in industry.
You meet really interesting people
Puts you ahead of the competition, more faith in people in Industry.
It will make you more confident.
Don't let people take advantage of you, although your cheap labour don't just keep doing placements you can say that you say is there a job here for me. Move upwards and get a job out of it.

Getting a placement:
Have a hit-list, aim him! No point going for the low agencies you don't want to work for.\
Research everything, go on the website! Take the time to look at there work as they take time to look at yours.
Talk to others who have been on placements.

What to do when your there?:
Be Punctual, stay til they kick you out! Ask question how you make that?
Enthusaism goes a long way
Be yourself, falsifying yourself. Not the person they hired! Be Honest!
Admit if you haven't done something before: say i can't build it but i can do some designs for what it might look like.
Spell their name right...

Design is not your job!
20% of your day is designing infront of a computer, the rest is meetings
Design is about people, relationships
Your personality, the way you act and our work ethic is the only things they are going to get you anywhere in employability. Your portfolio is just the way in.

I have also bought the democratic lecture book by Craig, which I am going to read into the other lectures. I found this very interesting and a clever spin in which made me listen as it was something that I was interested in, as its what no one normally tells you about the industry.
