Web Induction

History of the Internet.

The internet is quite new as it was only create in 1991. By a company in Switzerland named CERN. It was scientists that wanted to invent a way of sending information without meeting different people."To link & access info of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will." Tim Berners-Lee (6 Aug 1991)

At first the internet was purely text based and all run from one web server which brings me to the next computer invented by Steve Jobs. In which was used to host every single website by one single server.

1992- First image went live on image but it had to be a universal file format, one of the first ones to be used was a PNG, but also JPEG could have been used as this is universal too.

Terminology
All websites are made out of code & websites like google & safari read this & then turn it into what it is seen as.

HTTP- Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. This is the process of the transferring of the code, from webserver to the computer.

URL- Web Address. This is the uniform resource locator buy a space in the web server to access a website.

HTML- Hyper Text Markup Language

CSS- Cascading style sheets. This makes websites look appealing.

FTP- File Transfer Protocol- Sending a protocol to another computer or web server, which would mainly be a large body of information.

CMS- Content Management System- This is a static website which can't be changed although the most successful website is a dynamic website which can be changed easily and will be changed constantly.

To make websites we use Adobe Dreamweaver which we will we learning to use in workshop sessions.

Skeuomorphism
Imitate something which it isn't. For example when eBooks actually turn the page when you press next. It it a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that where nessary in the original context. A good example of this is the newsstand on the iPhone. This is has currently been updates with ISO7 but even though they have cleaned this up that have still used the idea of skeuomorphism due to the fact of getting the magazines on a ledge even though the wooden look alike background has been missed out.

Responsive
It is responsive because the design responds. Eg can be adapted a variety of media using various screens. Can adjust to what the screen you are using when you are looking at it.

Web Designer: Decide what it looks like.
Developer: Develop the website only.

Design: Design for non-profit organisations. Massimo Viganelli - uses grid on all websites and we still use his guide till this day.

Whats the point?
Always ask that question if designing for clients. They need to serve a purpose there is no point in having a website if there is no need as it wont have a particular audience etc... And need to enrich customers as it will be a waste of your time and there money and it will be your fault if there is no viewers on the websites.

What is the purpose of the website?
The purpose of this website is to showcase the companies work and therefore needs to be professional. It is to promote the company due to there past work for there future clientele.
It is a point of contact as it has a call to action and links to other social networking groups of theres etc...

Who are the Target Audience?
The target audience are possible clientele of the agency. The website needs to look professional due the website will a big part of there decision if they chose them over another agency.

What do the Target Audience need from the Website?
The target audience need easily accessible & able to navigate easily around the website, but not too simple incase to client wants an innovative idea. A large display of the work they have done before but it needs to be of the standard of clientele they want to attract as there is no point in using very high end design for a top client if you want small businesses to contact you to design as they will be very uninvited to contact you to do there work as they may think you will turn it down. Also, they need contact information which is easily found. Also another interesting fact about the agency would be how they work and there manifesto as you want to know how they work if you are an ethical company you would want an ethical design agency to do your work rather than a very corporate company.

What is the purpose of this website?
The purpose of this website is to sell products and look at products before you buy them. Also you can see reviews on what people think of the actual products. Also some people like to look on the website rather than go straight to the shop because due to the one on one contact with a sales assistant you feel obliged to buy the product you are looking at.

Who are the Target Audience?
The target audience is not a high end market as they do a large range of prices. The type of audience could also be people that are buying presents so this will be a high turnover website during busy periods such as christmas etc...

What do the Target Audience need form the Website?
The target audience need easy navigation around the website due to all age ranges using it from grandparents to daughters & sons. Also, the touch of a wishlist is a nice feature due to it not been an unachievable target to get a charm for your bracelet. So you can put it on your wishlist to know which ones you liked without scrolling through all the charms every time. Also the bracelet & ring designer so you can see how your charms and ring will look stacked against each other, which is a nice touch.

What is the purpose of this website?
The purpose of the website is for people have an interest in paper and appreciate the printing techniques. It shows people how different effects can be worked together and how they have done it.
It is for people who do techniques at home and want to do it themselves who dont have the areas to do things to experiment with.

Who is the Target Audience?
The target audience is people who like to learn things to do at home and how they can do it from scratch. I will be mainly crafty students or people interested on hands on design or craft. As it isn't a very digitally inspiring as all of the work shown is all about the craft and the paper used. I am very interest in this type of website & I love looking at it everyday. Gives me great inspiration. Although the website is mainly about the design of invitations, so mainly party planners could use this website to develop invites.

What do the Target Audience need from this Website?
The target audience need a very inspiring website as there isn't many websites out there which are like this one totally devoted to paper and print techniques. The website needs to have a large range of designs for different occasions. Also, people who are looking for invitations need to know how made them so you can get in touch to see if they would be interested in doing your work?

The Purpose of the Website?
The purpose of the website is to promote the design agency creative with a K. They greet you to the team using illustrations rather than words. Also the showcase of the work, it has connections to there social networking sites so you can get in touch with them if you want them to design something for you.

Who are the Target Audience?
The target audience of this website I believe would be clients who like mainly illustrations. Which the homepage been very illustrative although it is in a very strict style and therefore would only attract a very niche audience. It would have to be clients who are interested in the company for them to go further as it doesn't take them and give them very much info and the page is very busy with moving animations and busy background which no easily recognisable navigation bar.

What do the Target Audience need from this Website?
The target audience need a call of action from this website as you need to get in touch with the agency if you would like them to do your design. You need to know there ethics and maybe a bit about the team and what they specialise in. Although this website doesn't have any of this and there isn't no number or address info just the social media website connections which I personally think is very unprofessional. But you do get a sense straight away of how they work and what there style is from the homepage of the website.

The purpose of the website?
The purpose of this website is to gain clientele and showcase there work.

Who are the Target Audience?
The target audience is people who are looking for typographic design work, as you can tell this is a very typographic based layout and simplistic illustration. With the use of orange, black & white it grips your attention straight away. Any graphic design student would appreciate the layout too.

What do the Target Audience need from this Website?
The target audience need clear instructions of how to get to see there work, they need to know where to get in touch if they would like any work doing. Also the ethics of the company need to be easily found with the manifesto of the company. As most clients like to know what the agencies thoughts before starting a join design work with them as they will be paying a lot of money for the design that they need to know they can get right and easily confer with them to get what they want.

brown.edu

What is the Purpose of the Website?
The purpose of this website is to hold information about Brown University, it will have a lot of information within in as there is a lot of information you need to thinking about when deciding about the university. They are trying to persuade students to come to the university over others and be very informative about statistic and courses.

Who are the Target Audience?
The target audience for this website would be potential students that would like to go to university in the area of the university or maybe has the best course for the subject she wants. Although, this website would not attract me and I am suppose to be the target audience.

What do the Target Audience need from this Website?
The target audience need information in clear & concise format, as they are not going to want to read irregular information and if there is too much to read through, they will just dismiss is it. Also if there isn't enough information about the area around the university people will be unsure about commuting to this area if there are going to be unsure whether they will like it. They need to know about the social union and what they do to make the students be apart of.
