Collect, Catogories & Communicate Research Brief

What is Research?

Let the process drive the outcome. Process is more important that the outcome.

Intuitive Approach: Knowledge already known
Stimulated Approach: Inspiration from surroundings (Internet & Books)
Systematic Approach: Make it reproducible, make it useful.

Phrase One:
Assimilation, when you pull together what you already know.
Phrase Two:
General, thinking outside of the box starting to think of possible solutions.
Phrase Three:
Development, focus in on something doing more development & refinement. And then repeat phrase two if you feel you need more information.
Phrase Four:
Communication, through one or more solutions to people either inside or out the design team.

You will go through this process at least 50 times in one brief in one week. Without subconsciously knowing.

Analysis

Problem
Brief
What need to know more about?
What already exists?
Fixed part of the briefs?
Questions?

Research

Trial & Error

Evaluation

What looks best?
How expensive?
Does it work?
How does it fit?
Which does the client prefer?

Solution

Compromise- Want to do, can be afforded, what is feasible

Be sure this is acceptable by getting feedback

Go back & research & analyse.

Broaden out then focus in, then broaden back out and then focus in. The only ending to this process should be a deadline.

Research is....

Finding out by asking...

HOW?
WHY?
WHAT IF?

...Collecting Info
Info through a variety of sources including books, journals & the internet.

Experimenting or talking to people & analysing information.

....A Process
By which you have processed & generated a final outcome

Types of Research

Primary
Collection of data you have collected yourself and doesn't already exist
Secondary
Published & recorded data that has already been collected.
Quantative
Facts & figures which is usually gathered & analysed
Qualitative
Explores peoples beliefs non numerical data. Observes subjects regularly although it is a subjective response as its based on opinions & beliefs.

Quantative & Qualitative can be both primary & secondary research.

RESEARCH

These are some photos I took of signs for Primary Research

Outside Signs

These are a few signs around the area where I like I tried to get a range although with it becoming dark nights early I didn't have much time to get a larger range. I believe I got a good range of different types of signs. Driving round and looking at sign, really brought my attention to how many are around showing actions or warnings.

Indoor Signs

These are some signs around my university which has brought my attention to how much signs are used to show warnings and restrictions and orders. Also they are used for wayfinding around the university which is visual also by using arrows to direct.

Secondary Research:

What are signs and symbols? They are part of the original language we used before we had formal language. This was a time when sounds and the meaning of the sounds was the means of communication. The original language was used before we became totally material. In the original language, the sound was a metaphor.

Road signs in the United Kingdom conform broadly to European norms, though a number of signs are unique and direction signs omit European route numbers.
There is a vast range of signs in use on British roads, from directional sign posts, to signs warning of possible hazards ahead, and regulatory signs instructing motorists to perform certain actions.

Almost all signs have rounded corners. This is partly for aesthetic reasons. It is also safer for anyone coming into contact with a sign, and it makes the sign more durable, as rain is less likely to corrode the corners.
Two typefaces are specified for British road signs: Transport and Motorway.
Transport is a mixed-case font and is used for all text on fixed permanent signs except route numbers on motorway signs. It is used in two weights: Transport Medium and Transport Heavy.

The importance of a warning sign is emphasised by the red border drawn around it and the triangular shape.
Signs in circular red borders are prohibitive, whether or not they also have a diagonal red line. Circular blue signs mainly give a positive (mandatory) instruction. Such circular signs may be accompanied by, or place on, a rectangular plate (information) that provides details of the prohibition or instruction; for example, waiting and loading plates and zone entry signs.
'Stop' signs (octagonal) and 'give way' signs (inverted triangle) are the two notable exceptions, the distinctive shapes being recognisable even if the face is obscured by dirt or snow.

A safety and/or health sign is ‘information or instruction about health and safety at work on a signboard, a colour, an illuminated sign or acoustic signal, a verbal communication or hand signal.’ These terms are all detailed in guidance to the regulations.
A signboard is a combination of shape, colour and symbol or pictogram made visible by adequate lighting and which may have supplementary text.

The use of symbols and graphical images is a simple safety system used to convey safety messages at a glance.
Colours and symbols appropriately used can provide ever-present information and warnings of hazards which are essential to safety at work, and in some instances may be independent of language

General warning signs are used in instances in which the particular hazard, obstacle or condition is not covered by a standard sign. In Europe, they usually compromise an exclamation mark on the standard triangular sign with an auxiliary sign below in the local language indentifying the hazard, obstacle or condition. In countries using diamond shaped signs, the explanatory language is often written directly on the diamond shaped sign, although it may contain only a general warning such as caution and pictograms may also be used.

These are the colours that they use in response to a command. They always use the same colour for every sign they make so people can make a relevance straight away.

  • The color brown relates to quality in everything - a comfortable home, the best food and drink and loyal companionship.
  • The Colour red is for fire & blood therefore promote danger.
  • The color green is the color of balance and harmony. This is a very calming colour and that is why there is so much of it on earth.
  • The colour yellow is a simulating colour which is attention grabbing therefore your more likely to look and avoid the message.
  • The colour blue is a loyal & trust worthy colour.

These are the most common signs around my surroundings and the explanation of why they are the way they are and what they are.

This is a key for the use of signs all over the world you can see the main use for the sign is the white triangle with a red border, which is the one we use in the UK.

Street Artist Article

A street artist puts up signs to tell mobile users to pay attention while walking
But, as these pictures show, some phone users were apparently too engrossed in their handsets to even notice the signs.
Shells wanted to make people more aware of their surroundings - especially when crossing the road.

Although this didn't work due to them been so engrossed in the mobiles that they wasn't aware of there surroundings which is the point that the artist wanted to do. As she wanted the to be more aware especially when crossing roads.

We had a critique in our groups that we had our research main area of focus on we all had different area in printed text & reading to research and we then discussed them within the crit with each other.
We was then given a word to create a brief against which we could then go onto work as a group or individually. We all choose to work as a group as the range of work would be larger and more better and indepth work all together.

Our new word was:

How to get people to read more?
But it is debatable just how much notice mobile phone users will pay to the signs of street artist Jay Shells, despite the appeal for them to 'pay attention'.
The official-looking signs he put up in New York ask them to 'Pay Attention While Walking - Your Facebook Update can wait'.
