How to get people to read more?

How To Get People To Read More Research

My first role within the group was to research bookmarks to create a design for our own books they would receive when hey follow the wall and they complete the story when they get to the library. So here is my research i did for the bookmarks.

I likes this book mark due to the clip you can put onto the front of the cover as you cant always see the design of the bookmark. I like how you can keep the bookmark where it is as i tend to lose mine as i out them down and then loose then. So this seems like a good invention for me.

I liked this one as you have seen faces before you i have never seen tales or the pole sticking up out of the book. I think if we was doing an underwater story this would have been very appropriate. And also they are quite filmsey for a young children's book as they will just chuck it around it will bend and get ripped.

I liked these character which would be good as these are characters from the story i like the fact they are reading books too and you can clip them on the page rather than just slotting it in. The colours are very bright like what we are aiming for in our project.

This is an example of a bookmark using a different material which it would be very appropriate for an older target audience although the sharp edges and toughness of the metal would probably hurt the child. Although, i do think this is a very good alternative material as it wouldn't be as destructed as easily.

I like this was a unique bookmark as normally they are long & straight bu this takes up a large amount of the page across the top rather than downwards. The drawing is very simple but effective. And i like how it has just framing the title of the book. Although this maybe not be true for the position throughout the book, unless the book is designed for the bookmark.

This is a clever idea of having a front of the bear on one side and the back on the other. The shading shows a very realistic 3d effect the tale and the wings almost look like they are coming off the back, like they are separate.

This is my favourite i love the little worm. He is the bookworm,  like how he looks as though he is sliding through pages, although this would not be fit for purpose due then it would be on multiple pages and therefore not fulfilling its function.

When i seen this i thought this was very cute and very appropriate then i realised that reading educationally is not about the parent reading to the child its about the child reading with the parents help and therefore wouldn't just fall asleep on a page. I think if we do add text onto the bookmarks this will be a good thing to think about.

These characters are simple like ours and i like how they can overlap the page too rather than just slipping in.

This are very appropriate and i think if the characters where not digitally created then we should definitely go for a more creative different material on the bookmarks although this would not fit with the project so far so therefore would not be working as a group and the work would not match. But i also like the use of the feet and the head so you can open it up at either side but still close due to the thin string joining them together.

Then we had a rehink of what else we could do because we didn't have enough tasks for everyone. So i came up with the Star Chart/Reading Chart. When i started the research for this they was all so poorly designed and didn't know where to start. So i started to think about praise they need to move upwards to show they are getting better. And the best way would be through stickers to show them they are doing well as they learn from praise and receiving something for that good work.

This is my research for the reading/star chart as they wasn't much on the internet for the design of star charts. This is the aim of a star chart to put stickers and fill the whole thing up and receive a bigger prize when you have filled the whole chart up.

I like the idea of using different stickers so they can choose different ones that they want. I like the different shapes used in this as well.

High Culture Vs Low Culture Lecture

High Culture Vs Low Culture Lecture

Defining the Avant-Garde

The Dictionary Definition, this is a very basic definition. If you are doing something different then you are being avant-garde. Also you can be part of the avant-garde it is a group and a part of a quality.

Brandon Zara Fashion Shoes- Which claims these shoes are avant-garde.

Florists and typeface and homes and hotel and weddings are avant-garde. This term is used all the time in popular culture in use for different things. The term avant garde has been mutulised to be almost functionlas.

Which the avant of modernity you have this notion of the avant-garde is that type of work by artists that say they are challenging the conventions of art.

'Fauves' Wild Beast- Avant-garde is about rebellion, challenging and been shocking. This is from the very early 1900 and is still risounding in our curriculum as shocking and been avant-garde.

These are the myths that surround our education. All of these are problematic as why is it so important to create new things as is there nothing to be learnt from recycling. Why is is all about the new. The Postmodernism says thats it impossible to create something original anyway as everything has been done before. If every single course was been innovative & experimental and how creative is studying a course in art & design? If you are been grading on things then how experimental can you be?

The old days of art & design before it was institutionalised. In the 18th century the practice f art was done through an apprentice system as you was signed to a master who was already an artist. You would slavishly copy his work until you would be able to copy it amazingly. When you eventually got the depth of doing that correctly then you would paint the background of his painting then he would finish it off and take credit for it. This went on for 100 of years. This is not about any of the above concepts as its about copy someone style, Has art & design ever been original?

This celebrates the individual creative self and creative genius. This is a painting of Chaterern who was a poet. This exemplifies all the myths that hang over us today. When he was 19 he couldn't sell any of his work so he couldn't eat. No one understands him as his poetry is too clever for them and he kills himself from drinking a substance. This suggests that artists are more special and creative than the rest of us. Its the cruel world to not understanding the shining light and we just didn't recognise it. This concept trails us like a ghost as suggests they are superior to us.

The notion of avant garde relies on the myth of challenging and convention of the individual as been a superior figure. You are dealing with that concept as thinking of themselves as been a leader & seperate. Avant garde from the french means the advancing garde. The van guard is the elite troupes which are seperate form the rest and they started the war for the rest to follow.
Hes painting here is that while everyone else painting the gloss modernity hes painting the slavery wage and the poor, as he is trying to remind people about the expoitation happening in others lifes.

This is an appropriate to art & design this is aesthetically experimental is it avant garde to the way it looks. This goes back to the notion of been created as something special. The notion is avant gardism here that implies the indivual is way ahead and sometime we will catch up just by been aesthetically interesting.

This is about politically shaking thins up. They are almost mutually exclusive.

Right wing avant gardism is represented by Whistler here. You have intellectuals that surround avant garde which write about avant-garde why it is individual. You get a bunch of brightest by living to describe why it is culturally important which becomes a self fulfilling prophecy which goes right throughout to the 21st century. Artists create work for critics. You get this tendency of art drifting away from society. As artist don't care if people don't understand there work.

Significant form is to .....

Are you all been moved aesthetically? He things this has significant form. If you don't understand it and don't feel anything from it is it because you don't understand significant form. And therefore he says your uneducated.

The theories who justified Jackson pollocks work as all the painting had been leading up to his work.

Whats you get a distance between the world the work and the avant-garde.

You can make this conservative art that people understand and that isn't radical at all.

If you are trying to be radicle then you need to understand the fact that people will not understand you and what you are doing.

What is Kitch?

Kitch is commercial art and things that designed to be sold and mass produced and mass marketed, it is like base culture. In popular discourse it means bad taste or tacky things. But the term kitch comes form art critics who are basically using the term to define art through high culture & low culture.
Arnol Houser says that kitch is something that aim to be high culture but fails in one way or another.
Kitsch is anything that is not avant-garde effectively.

Constable Haywain- This is not kitch as everyone knows it art, and part of high culture.

Certain critics would say this is kitch due to is been bought and sold. If you put it on a big gold frame, then it would definitely become kitch. It is a bad version of the first item.

This has been recreated as a door stopper and there been recreated as kitch.

Leonardo Davinci work has been recreated as a letter rack. As the have squashed the table and the airbrush style as it is art as it aspiration of commerce and aiming at high end art but failing therefore kitch.

Commemoration- suppose to convay romance as it is suppose to move you as the same way art does but doesn't.

Tigers in snow and says fine art on the top left corner. Its not contemporary art, but this is actually bought by people who think they are actually buying art.

Jeff Koons 'Michael Jackson & Bubbles the Monkey'- This is a sculpture life size, this is the cutting edge of fine art and was sold for thousands of pounds. This is a bit of tack he found as an ornament and he got people to make it bigger as a sculpture.

 Thomas Kinkade

This is a piece of Thomas Kinkade, his logo at the bottom says 'Thomas Kinkade, painter of light'.

Thomas is very rich due to he goes on QVC shopping channel and does fire sales of his things as print of his painting and tea cloths. His things are bought by people are all over the world.

Jack Fetriano- He sells things as print. The
Tate gallery say that he is not an artists and therefore wont give him a show. But people buy his art.

This is in Tate modern, it is a load of bricks laid on the floor. Which was scored by the popular press, which is in someways for good reason why it is art. You are been part in the elitist circle ad are interested more in this modern art rather than the one above.

 Tracey Emin- Bed

These decided that Tracey Amin that her bed was not avant garde and they decided to strip and make it avant garde. This is a journey in obscurity.

These are art terrorist, as they call themselves. These are radical art terrorists. They do lots of shocking activities such as getting a million pound and burning it. As this is avant garde. The winner of the turner price got 20000 pounds that year and the k-foundation award and they would get 40000 pounds as they had to be the worse person and the same person of the turner award won the k-foundation award too.

If you go back to avant garde as been creative and genius and you look at contemporary art now and there is no resemblance to that now. People don't buy these things because is a creative genius it because its avant garde.

If there is an avant garde around today its definitely not going to be found in art practice and will be found in design and media as they speak to people in an understandable design.
